＜４月のロンドン歩く会の写真レポート＞ Saturday 27th April 1066 Harold's Way : Rochester to Maidstone walk

４月の写真レポートです。

4月27日　ロチェスター〜メイドストーン・ウォーク（レポート）※リーダによる原文は最後にあります。

７名のウォーカーがロチェスター駅に集合しました。

1066年ハロルド王の、ヘイスティングスの戦いの古戦場への道（の一部）をたどるウォークを楽しんできました。

最初はロチェスター大聖堂をちょっと見学。この大聖堂は、カンタベリーに次いで、英国で二番目に古いもの。

現在ではイングリッシュ・ヘリテイジの管轄下にある周辺の興味深い遺跡を見ながら通過しました。

その後、メドウェイ川の遊歩道に出て、高速道路M２の下をくぐって、ノーズダウンにやってきました。

ここは、天気が良ければメドウェイ谷から素晴らしい景色が見られる場所なんです。

お昼には、パブ・ロビンフッドで「Oishi」ランチタイム。昼食後は、ブルーベルの丘を登りくだりしました。

写真は青銅器時代の墳墓「 Kits Coty House」の前で撮りました。最後にAllington Lockのパブマルタ・インでお茶をしてから、

メイドストン・イーストから電車でロンドンに戻りました。ご参加の皆さん、お疲れ様でした。

Seven of us enjoyed walking what someone has imagined was part of King Harold’s route to Battle near Hastings in 1066. 

We had a brief look round Rochester Cathedral, Britain’s second oldest after Canterbury, and passed the impressive remains of the nearby castle, 

now looked after by English Heritage, before braving a rather windswept  alongside the River Medway. 

Our route took us under the M2 motor way and up on to the North Downs where you can enjoy fine views across the Medway valley on a good day. 

Our pub stop at the Robin Hood was a welcome break and the food was pronounced “oshi” (delicious! – have I got that right!). 

After lunch there were a few ups and downs around Bluebell Hill before pausing for a group photo in front of the Bronze Age dolmen called Kits Coty House. 

Later we had some welcome refreshment in the Malta Inn at Allington Lock back on the River Medway before making our way to Maidstone East Station 

for a train back to London.
