Epping Forest Walk on Sunday 5th June
Fourteen members of the ‘London Walking’ group met at Loughton underground station for a 10 am start. Our walk started with a short stop at the local supermarket (for essential supplies). We then set off towards the forest, walked for about 15 minutes along old Station road, crossed Loughton High Road and into Forest Road (the forest was ahead of us). As the sun started to shine we found ourselves amongst the ancient oak trees on the edge the forest near Staples Pond. We followed the ‘Green Ride’ path to ‘Lost Pond’ where the yellow irises were just about in bloom and a dog was having his morning swim. We returned to the main path and continued on to Ambresbury Banks (a 2,500 year old archaeological site), we had our packed lunch here in the shade of tall beech trees. After lunch was finished we continued on the forest path, heading towards Epping town but circled back to the Green Ride path towards the old ‘Clay Road’. With Baldwins Pond on our left we climbed our last hill out of the forest and back towards Loughton. The weather continued to be really sunny and warm so we all went to the Gardeners Arms for a well-earned drink before returning to Loughton Station.
